The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colours are desired. A tradition of making batik is found in various countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Nigeria; the batik of Indonesia, however, is the best- known. Indonesian batik made in the island of Java has a long history of acculturation, with diverse patterns influenced by a variety of cultures, and is the most developed in terms of pattern, technique, and the quality of workmanship. It may either come from the Javanese word amba ('to write') and titik ('dot'), or may derive from a hypothetical Proto- Austronesian root *be. C. The word is first recorded in English in the Encyclop. It is attested in the Indonesian Archipelago during the Dutch colonial period in various forms: mbatek, mbatik, batek and batik. It already existed in Egypt in the 4th century BC, where it was used to wrap mummies; linen was soaked in wax, and scratched using a stylus. In Asia, the technique was practised in China during the Tang Dynasty (6. AD), and in India and Japan during the Nara Period (6. AD). In Africa it was originally practised by the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria, Soninke and Wolof in Senegal. In Java, all the materials for the process are readily available . Rouffaer argues that the technique might have been introduced during the 6th or 7th century from India or Sri Lanka. Brandes and the Indonesian archaeologist F. Lovely, authentic Indonesian Batik Cantings with Bamboo Handle Fine, Med & Large Spout. Batik (Javanese pronunciation:; Indonesian:) is a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to whole cloth, or cloth made using this technique. Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool. A. Sutjipto believe Indonesian batik is a native tradition, since another regions in Indonesia such as Toraja, Flores, Halmahera, and Papua, which were not directly influenced by Hinduism, have an age- old tradition of batik making. He concluded that this delicate pattern could be created only by using the canting, an etching tool that holds a small reservoir of hot wax, and proposed that the canting was invented in Java around that time. This evidence suggests that intricate batik fabric patterns applied with the canting existed in 1. Java or even earlier. In 1. 87. 3 the Dutch merchant Van Rijckevorsel gave the pieces he collected during a trip to Indonesia to the ethnographic museum in Rotterdam. Today the Tropenmuseum houses the biggest collection of Indonesian batik in the Netherlands. The Dutch and Chinese colonists were active in developing batik, particularly coastal batik, in the late colonial era. They introduced new patterns as well as the use of the cap (copper block stamps) to mass- produce batiks. Displayed at the Exposition Universelle at Paris in 1. Indonesian batik impressed the public and artists. The local people there adapted the Javanese batik, making larger motifs with thicker lines and more colours. In the 1. 97. 0s, batik was introduced to Australia, where aboriginal artists at Erna Bella have developed it as their own craft. Patterns are drawn with pencil and later redrawn using hot wax, usually made from a mixture of paraffin or bees wax, sometimes mixed with plant resins, which functions as a dye- resist. The wax can be applied with a variety of tools. A pen- like instrument called a canting (IPA: . A tjanting is made from a small copper reservoir with a spout on a wooden handle. The reservoir holds the resist which flows through the spout, creating dots and lines as it moves. For larger patterns, a stiff brush may be used. The areas treated with resist keep their original colour; when the resist is removed the contrast between the dyed and undyed areas forms the pattern. The cloth need to be drawn on both sides and dipped in a dye bath three to four times. The whole process may take up to a year; it yields considerably finer patterns than stamped batik. Infants are carried in batik slings decorated with symbols designed to bring the child luck, and certain batik designs are reserved for brides and bridegrooms, as well as their families. Consequently, a person's rank could be determined by the pattern of the batik he or she wore. In the Javanese naloni mitoni ceremony, the mother- to- be is wrapped in seven layers of batik, wishing her good things. Batik is also prominent in the tedak siten ceremony when a child touches the earth for the first time. As part of the acknowledgment, UNESCO insisted that Indonesia preserve its heritage. Historically, it was essential for ceremonial costumes and it was worn as part of a kebaya dress, commonly worn every day. The use of batik was already recorded in the 1. Indonesians crossing religious, racial and cultural boundaries. Batik has somewhat revived at the turn of the 2. Indonesian fashion designers to innovate batik by incorporating new colours, fabrics, and patterns. Batik has become a fashion item for many Indonesians, and may be seen on shirts, dresses, or scarves for casual wear; it is a preferred replacement for jacket- and- tie at certain receptions. Traditional batik sarongs are still used in many occasions. The value of batik exports, meanwhile, increased from $1. It is produced in Malaysia with similar, but not identical, methods to those used in Indonesia. Prior to UNESCO's recognition and following the 2. Pendet controversy, Indonesia and Malaysia disputed the ownership of batik culture. However, Dr Fiona Kerlogue of the Horniman museum argued that the Malaysian printed wax textiles, made for about a century, were quite a different tradition from the . The female uniform of Garuda Indonesia flight attendants is a modern interpretation of the Kartini style kebaya with parang gondosuli motifs. It is worn by wrapping it around the hip, or made into a hat known as blangkon. The cloth can be filled continuously with a single pattern or divided into several sections. Certain patterns are only used in certain sections of the cloth. For example, a row of isosceles triangles, forming the pasung motif, as well as diagonal floral motifs called dhlorong, are commonly used for the head. However, pasung and dhlorong are occasionally found in the body. Other motifs such as buketan (flower bouquet) and birds are commonly used in either the head or the body. The head section can be at the middle of the cloth, or placed at one or both ends. The papan inside of the head can be used to determine whether the cloth is kain panjang or sarong. The body can be divided into two alternating patterns and colours called pagi- sore ('dawn- dusk'). Brighter pattern are shown during the day, while darker pattern are shown in the evening. The alternating colours give the impression of two batik sets. Batiks from Java can be distinguished by their general pattern and colours into batik pedalaman (inland batik) or batik pesisir (coastal batik). Batiks which do not fall neatly into one of these two categories are only referred to by their region. A mapping of batik designs from all places in Indonesia depicts the similarities and reflects cultural assimilation within batik designs. Inland batik has earthy colour. Certain patterns are reserved for royalty, while other are worn on specific occasions. At a Javanese wedding for example, the bride wears specific patterns at each stage of the ceremony. Batik Solo typically has sogan background and is preserved by the Susuhunan and Mangkunegaran Court. Batik Jogja typically has white background and is preserved by the Yogyakarta Sultanate and Pakualaman Court. In contrast to inland batik, coastal batiks have vibrant colours and patterns inspired by a wide range of cultures as a consequence of maritime trading. Pekalongan has the most active batik industry. During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia in early 1. The workshops funded by the Japanese however were able to produce extremely fine batiks called Jawa Hokokai. As of 1. 98. 0, batik tiga negeri was only produced in one city. Natural indigo dye made from Indigofera is among the oldest known dyes in Java, and its local name tarum has lent its name to the Citarum river and the Tarumanagara kingdom, which suggests that ancient West Java was once a major producer of natural indigo. Noted Priangan batik is produced in Ciamis, Garut, and Tasikmalaya. Other traditions include Batik Kuningan influenced by batik Cirebon, batik Banten that developed quite independently, and an older tradition of batik Baduy. Batik Banten employs bright pastel colours and represents a revival of a lost art from the Sultanate of Banten, rediscovered through archaeological work during 2. Twelve motifs from locations such as Surosowan and several other places have been identified. It is traditionally worn as iket, a type of Sundanese headress similar to Balineseudeng, by Outer Baduy people of Lebak Regency, Banten. Therefore, coastal batik from northern Java probably influenced Jambi. In 1. 87. 5, Haji Mahibat from Central Java revived the declining batik industry in Jambi. The village of Mudung Laut in Pelayangan district is known for producing batik Jambi. Batik Jambi, as well as Javanese batik, influenced the Malaysian batik. The fabric is immersed in clay for more than 1 day and later designed with motifs of animal and flora. Many patterns are inspired by local designs, which are favoured by the local Balinese and domestic tourists. Modern batik artists express themselves freely in a wide range of subjects. Some designers promote batik Bali as elegant fabric that can be used to make casual or formal cloth. Using high class batik, like hand made batik tulis, can show social status. Malaysian batik are usually patterned with floral motifs with light colouring. Batik was mentioned in the 1. Malay Annals. The legend goes when Laksamana Hang Nadim was ordered by Malacca King, Sultan Mahmud, to sail to India to buy 1. Unable to find any that fulfilled the requirements explained to him, he made up his own. Batik Supplies @ Artstore - Art Supplies . Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting (I also spelled tjanting). The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colours are desired. Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other stone. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution known as size, and then carefully transferred to an absorbent surface, such as paepr or fabric. Through several centuries, people have applied marbled materials to a variety of surfaces. It is often employed as a writing surface for calligraphy , and especially book covers and endpapers in bookbinding and stationery. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique monotype. Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used. The simplest encaustic mixture can be made from adding pigments to beeswax, but there are several other recipes that can be used—some containing other types of waxes, damar resin, linseed oil, or other ingredients. Pure, powdered pigments can be used, though some mixtures use oil paints or other forms of pigment. Name. Price. Image. Name. Price Large Tjanting 2mm Needle. One would probably ask, what would this DVD offer differently from other resources, aside from the fact that it sums up many facts regarding Maqamat in a single package? Some people question whether you can even do an HIIT workout on an exercise bike. Some folks just want to understand the pros and cons of stationary bike HIIT. I see the question quite often in forums: I’m hearing a lot about the benefits of an HIIT workout. Can I do it on my exercise bike? In a word: Yes! HIIT stands for high intensity interval training. Almost any activity that can be done as a steady- state exercise can be turned into an HIIT workout. In fact, it could be that an exercise bike is perfect for an HIIT workout. On your stationary bike you’re able to control both the resistance and how fast you peddle. This gives you a lot of control over the high intensity portion of your workout. If you’re new to HIIT, I would suggest doing the high intensity interval for a short time. It’s very popular to do the intense interval for 8 seconds followed by 1. Experiment. See what works for you. Remember, during the rest and recovery interval, peddle very slowly. It seems that part of the benefit of the HIIT system comes from making the low intensity interval as much as a recovery session as is possible. After the recovery interval, throw yourself into the high intensity interval with renewed vigor. On the Next Page – Choosing a stationary bike for HIIT! Check your inbox to get started with the. The Top 3 Reasons to Do High- Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)Last Updated: September 1. If your goal is to get or stay lean and maintain your cardiovascular health, you don’t have to grind out a single long session of grueling cardio. Ever. That’s right? Here’s a recent shot of me: I dieted for about 6 weeks before this shoot to go from 9 to 7% body fat and did no more than 2 hours of cardio per week, with individual sessions never going for more than 2. Some people are shocked to hear these numbers because they’re a far cry from what most coaches and trainers prescribe. And every day I hear from the victims of their “expert” advice, who are being ordered to suffer through 1 to 2 hours of cardio per day to get lean.
Well, I’m going to be honest–if it took 7 to 1. I wouldn’t even bother. Life is too short to spend 1. Fortunately it doesn’t take that though. It doesn’t take anywhere near that, actually. If you know what you’re doing with your diet, you don’t need to exercise more than 4 to 6 hours per week to get as lean as you’d like. Yup, just 3 to 5 hours of weightlifting and 1 to 2 hours of cardio per week is more than enough. So, in this article, I’m going to explain 5 reasons why high- interval intensity training is my cardio of choice and almost a bit of a “secret weapon” for getting and staying lean. Let’s start with a simple explanation of what high- intensity interval training actually is. What Is and Isn’t High- Intensity Interval Training. High- intensity interval training, or HIIT for short, is a method of exercising where you alternate between periods of (almost) all- out intensity and low- intensity recovery. The idea is simple: during your high- intensity bouts, you’re pushing yourself almost as hard as you can, and during your low- intensity periods, you’re trying to catch your breath in preparation for the next sprint. Chances are you probably knew that, but it leaves you with some important questions, such as. This is the maximum rate of oxygen consumption during exercise and is a major factor in determining one’s endurance during longer bouts of exercise. What you’ll find in most studies that demonstrate the advantages of HIIT is that subjects reached between 8. VO2 max during the high- intensity periods of the exercise routines. This is nice to know but not very useful because VO2 max is hard to approximate while exercising. It’s tough to know with any certainty whether you’re at, let’s say, 6. VO2 max without being hooked up to a metabolic cart. A more practical way of prescribing intensity in your HIIT training is thinking with your Vmax. This is the speed where breathing becomes labored and you feel like you can’t bring in as much air as your body wants. It’s about 9. 0% of your “all- out” effort. The first thing to know is your goal during your high- intensity intervals is to exercise at your Vmax. That is, you need to get moving fast enough that your breathing becomes labored and you can’t quite suck in air as quickly as you want to, and you need to hold that speed for a period of time. As you can imagine, this requires a pretty significant amount of effort. Think sprinting, not jogging. Repeatedly achieving and sustaining this level of exertion is the whole point of high- intensity interval training. If you don’t do this–if you can chat away on the phone during your “high- intensity” periods–you’re not doing HIIT. If your workout racks up just a couple minutes of Vmax exertion, it’s not going to be as effective as one that involves double that amount. This is just a matter of proper workout programming, and the factors at play are the duration and intensity of both your high- and low- intensity intervals and of the workouts as a whole. We’ll talk more about how to create an effective HIIT routine soon, but first, let’s talk a bit more about the advantages of this style of training. HIIT Burns More Fat in Less Time. If a supplement or workout or claims to be a “shortcut” for gaining muscle or losing fat, it’s likely a sham. Well, high- intensity interval training actually delivers the goods. It’s significantly more time effective for losing fat than traditional “low- intensity steady- state” cardio (LISS). For example, this study conducted by researchers at the University of Western Ontario found that people lost more fat doing 4 to 6 3. If you do the math here, that’s pretty impressive. This wasn’t a one- off occurrence, either–these results have been replicated in quite a few other studies as well. The science is clear: if your goal is to burn as much fat in as little time as possible, then HIIT is the way to go. Although the exact mechanisms behind this advantage aren’t fully understood yet, scientists have isolated several factors. Research shows that HIIT. And when it comes to muscle preservation, cardio has a pretty bad rap. Some of this is justified–research has shown that the longer your cardio sessions are, the more they impair strength and hypertrophy–but that doesn’t mean you have to fear cardio. There are four simple steps you can take to maximize fat loss and minimize muscle loss: 1. Use an aggressive but moderate calorie deficit. Eat a high- protein diet. Do 3 to 5 hours of resistance training per week. Keep cardio to a minimum. The reasoning behind point #4 is this: As a general rule, the less cardio you do, the more muscle you’ll preserve while in a calorie deficit. You can do no cardio whatsoever and lose fat, but this will only get you so far. If you want to get really lean (sub- 1. And the leaner you want to get, the more help you’re going to need from cardio. And so the predicament: you need to use cardio to bolster your daily energy expenditure and fat loss but you also need to keep it to a minimum to best preserve muscle. How do you go about this? Many people want to be lean more than they want to preserve muscle and, unaware of any other alternative, choose the Dark Side: hours and hours of grueling cardio every week to burn both fat and muscle away. Combine this with very- low calorie dieting, which is all too common, and you have a perfect storm of misery and muscle loss. Well, you can have the best of both worlds with high- intensity interval training. You don’t need to do more than a couple hours per week to significantly increase fat loss, with each session lasting only 2. When I’m cutting I keep myself in about a 2. I use a handful of fat loss supplements, I lift weights about 4 to 5 hours and do 1. HIIT per week, and here’s an example of what I’m able to achieve: Before My Fat Loss Routine. After My Fat Loss Routine. That “transformation” took about 1. I lost little- to- no muscle and very little strength (a few reps on a few different exercises). HIIT Helps Curb Cravings. The overeating is the biggest enemy of fat loss and the biggest temptations to overeat are hunger and cravings. This becomes particularly problematic as you get leaner and your “margins for error” with your calorie intake become very slim. Well, while the claim that low- intensity cardio stimulates the appetite and leads to greater food intake is probably not true, research shows that HIIT in particular can cause changes in the brain that decrease hunger and the desire to eat and increase fullness from food eaten. Anything that improves dietary compliance is a boon to your fat loss regimen, and HIIT does just that. How to Create the Optimal HIIT Routine. Alright, let’s now talk about creating the right HIIT workout for you. There are five aspects to this that we need to consider: The type of cardio. The duration and intensity of the high- intensity periods. The duration and intensity of the rest periods. The duration of the workouts. The frequency of the workouts. Let’s look at each point separately. The Best Types of HIIT Cardio. While you can use HIIT principles with any type of cardio, if your goal is to preserve muscle and strength, your best choices are biking, rowing, and sprinting. Research shows that the type of cardio you do has a significant effect on your ability to gain strength and size through weightlifting. What scientists found is the more a cardio exercise mimics the movement used in hypertrophy movements, like the squat or barbell row, for instance, the less it impairs strength and muscle growth. In the study cited above, the subjects that bicycled in addition to the weightlifting program gained more strength and size than those that ran or walked, and they suspect this was because the cycling movement imitates the squat. Keep in mind this is a minor point of optimization. If you can’t or don’t want to bike, row, or sprint, use whatever method of cardio you enjoy most–swimming, jump roping, stairmaster, and so forth. It’s not going to whittle your muscle away. It’s also worth noting that you want to adjust your speed in your training more than the resistance settings offered by various machines. The goal of HIIT is to go fast and hard, not slow and hard. I do my HIIT on a recumbent bike and do raise the resistance slightly for my high- intensity intervals, but only enough to give me something to pedal against. How Long and Intense Your High- Intensity Intervals Should Be. As you now know, the total amount of minutes spent at Vmax is the key factor in determining the effectiveness of your HIIT workout. Too little time at this almost- all- out level of exertion results in a “kinda- high- intensity” workout and too much can lead to exhaustion and overtraining. So let’s make sure you get both of these things right. First, just to reiterate, the intensity target is Vmax, which is the speed where breathing becomes labored and you feel like you can’t bring in as much air as your body wants. It’s about 9. 0% of your “all- out” effort. Don’t build up to this effort when you launch into a high- intensity interval. Give it everything you’ve got right out of the gate. You should be breathing hard within 1. In terms of duration of high- intensity intervals, 5. Tmax is sufficient if your goal is losing fat and improving metabolic health. Jigsaws - Make your own.
